Volunteers are invaluable to the shelter operations, whether it's in the capacity of walking dogs, assisting with office work, socializing cats, working at fund-raisers or serving on our board of directors. And, we always need volunteers!
If you would like to make a difference in the lives of animals by giving a much appreciated gift of your time, consider joining us!

Benefits of Volunteering
- Make a difference in the lives of homeless pets
and work towards
a community that is more humane for animals.
- Develop new skills
while exploring the field of animal welfare.
- Meet new people with similar interests.
- Acquire experience for future endeavors.
- Enjoy a wagging tail or a soft purr.
- Enjoy the satisfaction of knowing you have helped an animal in
need.
Most importantly, volunteering will make life brighter for the pets in our
care, and better for the people and animals in our community.
How to Become a Volunteer
Your first step in becoming a volunteer is to attend a volunteer orientation at the shelter. The orientation lasts about an hour
and a half where we'll give you an overview of our services, policies, and operations. You'll fill out an information form which helps determine the
best volunteer opportunities for you. Some activities, like dog walking, may require additional training before you can begin volunteering. Once you have completed orientation, you will be
able to help out and volunteer at the shelter, fundraising events, and in many other ways. Call Barb at (517) 552-8050 ext.36 or send email to barb@humane-livingston.org to
sign up for an orientation session.
Guidelines
- Requirements: Volunteers must have a special love for animals, be reliable, prepared to make a committment to animals and support our mission of assisting "our communities by providing pet adoption services, lost and found assistance, and education on the humane treatmen
t, responsible pet ownership, and overpopulation of companion animals."
- Equal Opportunity: The HSLC volunteer program offers many diverse opportunities for volunteers. We welcome and encourage participation from all sectors of the community.
- Release of Liability: All volunteers must sign a release of liability form before volunteering.
- Time Commitment: We ask volunteers to donate a minimum of 4 hours per month.
- Training: Volunteers will receive the appropriate training from a Volunteer Coordinator and/or the appropriate experienced volunteer.
Age Requirements
We invite adult, junior (14-17 years old), and family volunteers (families with children between the ages of 8-13) to participate. Involving children in our programs is especially important because we believe it is at this age that philanthropic involvement can extend into adulthood. We have a diverse group of volunteers including youth groups, retirees, disabled individuals, and court appointed community service workers.
Court Appointed Community Service Program
We offer a variety of tasks and flexibility, including weekday and weekend hours, to fulfill your obligation for court appointed Community Service. Call Sarah at (517) 552-8050 ext.10 or email sarah@humane-livingston.org to come in for an interview and set up a work schedule.
